Consultation on proposed changes to the 2021 ABPI Code and PMCPA Constitution and Procedure - Update

Thank you to everyone who submitted comments and evidence to the PMCPA and ABPI consultation on changes to the 2021 ABPI Code of Practice. We received over 3,500 comments on the Code and over 1,000 comments on the PMCPA Constitution and Procedure.  The responses contain invaluable feedback which will improve the Code and all submissions are being carefully reviewed and considered.

Given the volume of comments received and that many of the comments and feedback received were on areas of the Code where no changes were proposed, we are taking the following approach to updating the Code.

  1. Update the ABPI Code and PMCPA Constitution and Procedure with many of the changes proposed during consultation, amended to take into account feedback received.
  2. The PMCPA will continue ongoing projects, in particular to publish new guidance documents
  3. Begin work now to assess all the other feedback received on the Code ahead of a further public consultation on further changes in 2025

An anonymised brief summary of the consultation responses will be made available in due course. The ABPI Board will then agree the final changes to the ABPI Code, which will then be submitted to a general meeting of ABPI members for final approval. We aim to agree the text of the new Code by July 2024 and target AGM approval of the new Code in September 2024. Once published there will be a transition period.

Updating the ABPI Code is essential to supporting ethical decisions and high-quality patient care. Doing so ensures that the ABPI Code remains relevant, effective, and fit for the future.
